Whoa

I just got off a plane from the Dominican Republic, where I've been incommunicado for a week. On the cab ride home from the airport I hear about the Emerson thing (and the entire Cabinet, which I'll get to tomorrow).

All I will say is: I assume there is a bloody good explanation for this. Stephen Harper is not stupid, and doesn't just sit around, while forming a cabinet, musing about calling up Liberal MPs and enticing them to jump ship. There's got to be something more to it, because if there isn't, well, colour me disappointed.

And now I shall unpack and reorient myself.

Take care...

Welcome back!

Got a quick question for you (though I realize it may be too soon to ask)...

Any chance you're going to write an open letter to Emerson much like the one you wrote to Stronach.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

There was speculation that the Liberals might force a snap election which is why Martin retained the title of leader. I doubt that would happen but perhaps the CPC brass thinks otherwise. This Emerson move means that three parties instead of two will be required to bring down this parliament. It gives the Conservative minority more stability.

See my blog entry for 6 Feb for my theory.

... and what about the hypocrisy that is the Senate appointment of Fortier? It is amazing what lengths some sycophantic supporters of the CPC are willing to go to in explaining away Harper's mistakes.

By the way, ALW, that comment was not directed at you, but at some of your readers.

ALW, good to see you are back..
We had a discussion, under your post dated Jan. 05, 2006, tiltled "It's more a question of Both Combined". We touched the subject of democratic representation and in the context of Belinda Stronach. You may want to check your comments there...Phil

Kyle,

My beef with Belinda, as I made clear, was personal (I worked for her).

Sorry, should have been more clear that I was joking... The smirk I had while typing obviously didn't translate through.

ferrethouse,

So Stephen Harper can entice a Liberal to jump ship and cross the floor for a cabinet post to prevent a possible non-confidence vote and strengthen his minority and thats shrewed political leadership. When Paul Martin does the same thing, its an affront to democracy.

Ok then. How's that moral relativism working out for ya?

Top be fair, there is one major difference between Paul Martin and STephen Harper in this - Paul Martin did not just win and election two weeks ago on promises of change and accountablility, on having elected senators and on doing government different.

funny, he,s acting an awful lot like Paul Martin.

ALW, good to have you back.

Likewise. I'm in the "wait and see" boat on this one.

It's much better than the "freaking out like the world's about to end" boat.
