The Practical PM

Cabinet-formation issues aside, I really can't understand the media's obsession with Harper's "reclusiveness". Why has he stayed "out of sight"? Gee, I dunno. He's only the Prime Minister. Not like he has things to do. Things that don't involve staged photo-ops and throwing non-newsworthy scraps to the press gallery.

I realize that's how most politicians operate. But it baffles me that people haven't figured it out yet about Stephen Harper. This guy is different. Let Tim Powers explain it:
"You can't just do things for the sake of doing things. That's never been Harper," he said. "I think people would prefer the substance to the sizzle and I think Harper gives them substance."

Canadians have grown accustomed to a certain amount of flashiness when it comes to their federal leaders, he said. But Mr. Harper "is steady, deliberate, focused, and slow and steady wins the race."
Agreed. If you're looking for photo-ops, look elsewhere. Stephen Harper is here to work. I think over time, Canadians will come to appreciate it.

My bet is, he's pissed off with the majority of the media that has trashed him continually over the years. Now he's in the drivers seat and will choose when and where and even to whom he will speak.I really hope he's got a long memory and cuts off certain media outlets, namely the CBC, The Toronto Star and many others too numerous to mention. I see signs, they are starting to back off and report real information without the spin which is directly related to the way Mr. Harper is handling himself. In other words don't screw with this guy. He's our Prime Minister now. Good for you Mr Harper.

I don't blame him one bit. These guys, not even a year ago, wrote him off as never having a chance at becoming Prime Minister. It's actually quite amusing to see the hissy-fits they've been throwing over the lack of photo-ops.

What's so funny and sad at the same time is when Chretien's former communications director would say, with a straight face, that Harper should've just rushed some program out to the media to distract them. Which I suppose explains a lot of what happened back in those days.

On media relations, take a cue from Jane Taber today. On Mike Duffy live they were talking about a media vaccuum and how with no one filling the agenda they are still talking about David Emerson. It may be fun watching the media pull their hair out but it is leaving the impression that the new regime doesn't care. At some point it may hurt to have the press gallery as your enemy.

Harper will again make Canadians proud to be Canadians.

And that's the biggest vote getter of all.

Wow, ya just gotta love this, and you wonder why people don't like tories! Ever notice that people who didn't vote liberal certainly didn't say they were 'afraid' of them.

But here we go, not only do people think Harper is being smart by making incredibly bad choices for cabinet (even admitted in many blogs).

But they also think it's great that canadians can't even find out what he's doing. Wow, there's a BIG advance in democracy. Even the long term strategy of cutting out the media is being advised, and YOU thought people didn't like 'conservatism' because of the LEADER?

So not only is Harper going to continue the liberal practise of ignoring voting reform, which they previously supported, and continue the practise of refusing to nominate elected senators, hand out patronage jobs, give jobs to those willing to bail on their parties, ignore his own MP's, do we need to go on?

So not only do we continue with the WORST principles of the liberals, but now people think its GREAT that we can't find out what the heck he DOES.

I've got news for you, this is a DEMOCRACY, we didn't vote for a guy to hide in an ivory tower only to come out when he wants his ass kissed. Anybody can tell what he's doing, the exact same thing Bush does in the states, ignore everybody, refuse to answer questions, run a secretive government, and rely on 'Harpies' to defend his terrible actions.

I'm really sick of conservatism griping about how maligned they are. THe CBC and Star were the only media in the country that didn't kowtow to the tories, everybody else talked non stop about their majority win and completely ignored the NDP. Wake up, tories were HAND PICKED this win by corporate canada-a cursory look at what he's DONE so far tells you that.

You are the perfect candidate for the "Media Spin Doctors to target. It's time to stop perpetuating the bullshit. It's not working anymore. Why don't you get your information right from the Horse's Mouth, instead of the Horse's Asses.
